A custom Arabic typeface for text usages for Research Studio designed in London in 2011. After the initial design direction and drawings were agreed on, a typeface in 3 weights was conceived in collaboration with Kristyan Sarkis. This typeface drew inspiration from a thorough study of the classical cursive styles of calligraphy. Thuluth was investigated for the drawing of letterforms with particular attention to the design of ligatures and letter pairing alternates. The extended character set greatly enriched the typeface and placed it at the heart of the conversation which was just starting back then around Arabic type design for text applications which study the history and practice of the cursive styles of calligraphy.
